Editor Biographies
Michael Miller, Editor, is a Professor of Higher Education and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas. In his over 20 years of experience working in higher education, he has also served as Associate Dean and Acting Dean of the College of Education at San Jose State University, Chair of Higher Education at the University of Alabama, Director of the Research and Development Unit at the University of Nebraska, and Director of Annual Giving at Southern Illinois University. Additionally, he has chaired the University of Alabama’s Faculty Senate Committee on Student Affairs, and the University of Arkansas’ Faculty Senate Task Force on Faculty Governance Reform. Miller has published nearly 300 articles and chapters, has authored three books, and has edited eight books. His primary area of research has been aligned with participatory communities in higher education, related to both student and faculty involvement in institutional life. He served for five years as the editor of the Journal of College Orientation and Transition and is currently serving as the editor of the Journal of Research in Education. He has also served on the editorial boards of five different journals. He has also chaired nearly 80 doctoral dissertations, and has authored over $1 million in externally funded grants and contracts. His international work includes participation in the World Bank funding of postsecondary reform in Hungary, vocational technical education assessment in Jamaica, the data modeling for postsecondary education in Abu Dhabi, and lecturing on higher education administration and management in China, Egypt, and Spain. He holds a bachelors degree in Political Science from Southern Illinois University, a masters degree in Higher Education from Southern Illinois University, and a doctorate of education from the University of Nebraska.
John W. Murry, Jr., Associate Editor, is an Associate Professor of Higher Education and the former Associate Dean of Administration in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas. He has also served in the capacity of Interim Department Head and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling and Foundations. Prior to coming to the University of Arkansas in 1994, Dr. Murry was an Associate Professor of Business Law at Henderson State University (1991-1994) and Assistant Professor of Business at Mesa State College (1990-1991). Dr. Murry holds four degrees from the University of Arkansas (B.S.B.A., M.B.A., J.D., and Ed.D.). In addition, he has completed 15 hours of post-graduate course work in tax law at Southern Methodist University School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in the state of Arkansas and before the United States District Court. Dr. Murry spent five years as a practicing attorney and also has experience as a small business owner, and assistant director of admissions. He has authored or co-authored over 30 publications and made in excess of 50 presentations and/or conducted workshops at national, regional and state conferences in his academic areas of interest. He is the co-author of New Faculty: A Practical Guide for Academic Beginners, published by St. Martin’s Press. He regularly conducts workshops for colleges, universities and school districts focusing on training faculty and academic administrators about legal issues they face in their role as educators. Dr. Murry has also been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator in four funded external grants totaling approximately $700,000.
Greg L. Thomas, Deputy Editor, is the founder of weLEAD Incorporated and a leadership consultant. He has a master’s degree in Leadership from Bellevue University and has also been an adjunct professor at Bellevue.
